Planning a large gun show isn’t for the faint of heart.
Between wrangling vendors, locking down venues, handling permits, and making sure everything runs like clockwork, the last thing any organizer wants to stress over is traffic.
Not parking lot traffic.
We’re talking website traffic, the kind that gets booths sold, crowds lining up at the entrance, and your event talked about for months.
Unfortunately, most event websites fall flat on this front.
They look decent, maybe list the schedule, a vendor map, and a few sponsor logos, but they get barely any organic search traffic.
Nobody finds them. Nobody clicks. And definitely, nobody converts.
That’s where we come in.
This is the story of how we took a struggling event site and turned it into an organic traffic machine, ranking for over 41,000 keywords, driving 75,321 organic visitors, and putting this gun show on the national map.
Let’s break it down.
Before We Stepped In: Traffic Was Bleeding
Take a close look at that chart.
By July 2023, the site had taken a massive hit.
Organic traffic had plummeted to 75,321/month, down significantly from its peak. You can literally see the cliff they fell off.
Whether it was algorithm updates, stale content, poor technical SEO, or a mix of all three…the momentum was gone.
They were relying on a name, not a system.
That’s when they called us.
We came in at the dip.
When most agencies would’ve told them to start over or “run more ads,”
we saw an opportunity to resurrect this traffic engine from the dead.
More Keywords ≠ More Traffic (At Least Not Yet)
Between early 2023 and July 2023, their total keyword rankings increased, they were ranking for 20,472 keywords by July.
But here’s the trap…
Most of those rankings were buried in positions 21–100.
Let’s break down the data:
• Top 3: 562
• 4–10: 669
• 11–20: 1,085
• 21–50: 3,951
• 51–100: 13,244
That means 85%+ of their rankings were in no-man’s-land, too far down the page (or on page 5, 6, 7…) to actually drive clicks.
So while it looked like they were doing better in keyword count, it was mostly fluff.
The Real Reason Traffic Dropped
- Low CTR Positions They had a bloated keyword profile but no real visibility. Ranking for 13,244 keywords in the 51–100 range is basically invisible.
- Wrong Keywords Many of those might have been irrelevant, low-intent, or low-volume keywords.
- Loss of High-Value Positions If they previously had strong traffic-driving keywords in Top 3 or Top 10 and lost those, traffic drops hard, even if other rankings go up.
- SERP Feature Loss Their SERP features were only at 961. That’s minimal compared to the later results. This limits visibility in featured snippets, image packs, FAQs, etc.
The Client: A Major Gun Show Event Website
This client runs one of the largest and most recognized gun shows in the Southeast, drawing thousands of attendees and vendors each year.
But despite the real-world success of the event, their online presence was weak.
- Their website wasn’t showing up on Google.
- They weren’t ranking for any meaningful keywords.
- Ticket sales were overly dependent on email blasts and old-school methods.
They knew the potential was there. They just needed a system to get found by the thousands of people searching online every month for things like:
- “gun show near me”
- “ammo vendors in [city]”
- “buy guns legally in [state]”
- “2A events this weekend”
So they came to us.
The SEO Challenge: How Do You Scale Traffic for a Recurring Event?
Events present a unique SEO challenge.
You’re not just building traffic to a blog. You’re trying to:
- Boost attendance and ticket sales
- Attract vendors and exhibitors
- Build local authority for city-specific shows
- Keep things evergreen so you’re not starting from scratch every year
We had to build a long-term SEO system that delivered results now…
and kept compounding over time.
That meant:
Authority-building with high-quality backlinks
Ranking event-specific pages (without getting buried after the date)
Creating thought-leader content to attract links, shares, and trust
Targeting both national and hyper-local searches
Leveraging Google SERP features to dominate visibility
Our SEO Game Plan
🔎 Step 1: In-Depth Audit
We started in July 2023 with a deep-dive audit:
- Fixed technical SEO issues slowing the site down
- Identified critical indexing problems
- Evaluated their backlink profile and where they were falling short
- Found “easy win” keywords ranking in spots 11–30
- Built a map of where to send authority and traffic
From there, we put the roadmap together.
🧱 Step 2: Build Authority, Brick by Brick
Month after month, we:
- Created long-form content targeting search-intent blog topics (e.g., “What to expect at a gun show,” “Best ammo vendors in Florida,” “How to legally buy guns at events”)
- Interlinked blog posts to key pages like the homepage and event schedule
- Built white-hat backlinks through:
- Guest posts on industry sites
- Contextual link insertions
- PR mentions
- Syndicated high-performing blogs to increase reach and drive referral traffic
- Targeted local keywords for every event location (e.g., “Orlando gun show,” “Tampa gun expo,” “Miami ammo show”)
We treated the site like a real publishing platform, not just a place to dump event flyers.
By the time August 2025 rolled around, everything changed.
Here’s what the raw data says…
But let me translate it into money talk:
🚀 From July 2023 to August 2025:
We DOUBLED their keyword rankings, from 20,472 → 41,429
But we didn’t just bloat the list with garbage. We moved rankings into positions that actually print revenue:
| Ranking Bucket | Before (2023) | After (2025) | % Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top 3 | 562 | 959 | +70% |
| 4–10 | 669 | 1,080 | +61% |
| 11–20 | 1,085 | 1,430 | +32% |
| 21–50 | 3,951 | 6,510 | +64% |
| 51–100 | 13,244 | 26,820 | +102% |
| SERP Features | 961 | 4,630 | +382% |
What That Actually Means:
- 959 keywords in the Top 3 — aka the money zone
- Over 1,000 featured snippets, image packs, FAQs and map pack placements
- Dominating page 1 in competitive verticals
- A full-spectrum brand presence across multiple buyer intent stages
This wasn’t luck.
It wasn’t “just content.”
It was intentional, layered SEO strategy that pulled rankings from the depths of Google Hell into the spotlight.
How We Did It:
We didn’t just spray content everywhere and hope it ranks.
We went surgical:
- Audited every page and keyword that wasn’t converting
- Clustered content around buyer-intent keywords and decision-stage phrases
- Fixed weak internal linking structures
- Built power pages and tiered link velocity over time
- Exploited SERP gaps for mid-intent searches
- Took over featured snippets using structured data and schema
The Traffic Surge That Changed Everything
We didn’t just rank more keywords.
We drove actual traffic that turned into leads, sales, and real money in the bank.
Let’s go back to July 2023, the day we stepped in.
They were sitting on:
- 20,472 total keywords
- 75,321 monthly organic traffic
And honestly? Their traffic trendline was bleeding downward.
They were flatlining, despite technically ranking for a decent number of keywords.
Traffic Going Down While Rankings Were Up?
Yeah, we spotted that too.
Here’s why it was happening:
- Low CTR keywords were climbing, but they weren’t buyer-intent
- Their best money keywords were stuck on pages 2–5
- They were missing rich results (FAQs, featured snippets, map packs, etc.)
- Internal linking was a mess. No silos. No topical authority.
- Worst of all? Their “Top 3” keywords weren’t converting, just vanity metrics.
So we nuked what wasn’t working and rebuilt from the ground up.
The Flip: From Ghost Town to Growth Machine
By August 2025, the site was pulling in:
- 41,429 total keywords (2X growth)
- 124,598 in monthly organic traffic (+65% lift)
- SERP features? 4,630 — a 382% explosion in rich results
Let that sink in:
They went from barely hanging on…
To dominating Google’s front page in every direction that mattered.
What Did That Actually Do for Their Business?
“We tripled their inbound lead flow.”
“They had to pause campaigns just to catch up on booked calls.”
“Their calendar went from a ghost town to fully booked for weeks.”
It wasn’t magic. It was a system.
We targeted the right keywords.
We built topical dominance.
We turned traffic into trust… and trust into transactions.
This is what happens when you stop “doing SEO”
…and start building a search engine fortress.
